The Working Group covers a multitude of breeds. There are guard dogs such as Boxers, Rottweilers and Bullmastiffs; and all-purpose breeds such as the German Shepherd Dog. In Britain herding breeds, such as Border Collies and Shetland Sheepdogs, are included in this group, however in the US they form the Herding group (where we have grouped them).

The working breeds consist of those that use their brawn and bravery to serve humans and their sizes range from the Great Dane to the Pembroke Corgi. These dogs are generally known for their hardiness and intelligence. Temperament and trainability varies enormously with the breeds in the Working Group, but many of these dogs make excellent household pets and obedience competitors. As a group it has expanded enormously in terms of the number of breeds since the middle of the twentieth century.
