sporting gundog group

These dogs assist in finding and catching feathered and furry game. The Group includes the setters and pointers, which indicated where birds are; the retrievers, which fetch shot birds, hares and rabbits; spaniels, which do both jobs; and a large number of breeds, most of them from the European mainland, which are collectively known as the Hunt, Point and Retrieve (HPR) breeds.

Many of these breeds continue to actively participate in hunting and other field activities. Sporting dogs tend to be kindly, gentle creatures, tractable and not noisy. They are not all suited to living in towns rather than rural areas, but they are capable of adapting to family life. Potential owners of Sporting dogs need to understand that most require regular, invigorating exercise. These dogs are naturally alert and active and make well-rounded, likeable companions.
